The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international movement run by and for people who are no longer in full time employment.
Gosport U3A started in 1995 with ten or twelve people including Mary Patchett, Margaret Rowley and Pat Wharton, the Founders. In 1996 there were seven groups and around 25 members we now have 367 members offering 50 different interest groups, some of which are split into two or three groups to cope with demand. There are two Art Appreciation groups for example and four Scrabble groups.
The U3A approach to learning is to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun. There is no accreditation or validation and no assessments or qualifications to be gained.
